The Inter Provincial Mathematics Olympiad(IPMO) is a project of the South African Mathematics Society and is sponsered by the Actuarial Society of South Africa.
Provinces are considered in a sporting sense and not necessarily in geographical terms. Junior (up to grade 9) and senior (grades 10 up to 12) teams of ten members each are entered by the provinces. Teams write the papers in a centre in their region to take part. Papers are marked on the spot and the results are phoned in to the central organiser. “Provinces” which normally enter are: Boland, Border, Free State, Gauteng North, Gauteng South, KwaZulu-Natal Coast, KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, Northd-West Province, Northern Province and the Western Province.
The IPMO consists of two papers: one which is written individually and one consisting of ten questions that have to be solved by the team in 30 minutes. Teamwork is thus also important.
Results of 2007
2007 was a first for Nautilus in that 2 senior teams and 3 junior teams were entered for the Free State province opposed to the 1 senior team and 2 junior teams participating in competitions of the past. The Free State got very good results with the senior A-team obtaining the 3rd position and the junior A-team obtaining the 5th position. The senior B-team came 12th of the 15 senior teams from all over the country. The junior B-team came 10th and the C-team 11th of the 20 junior teams from all over the country.
